Empathy, Love, and Culture.

When asked what kind of theatre artist do I want to be or what art do I want to make, the short answer is I don’t really know. I am a theatre artist. One who chases opportunities to tell stories that are thought-provoking, enchanting, heart- breaking, and passionate. I want to leave an audience thinking about the world, moved by the work that was just left on the stage. Right there in front of them. I want to create art that they can show their friends and family. I want to be apart of the movements for change. Creating theatre that not only challenges the way that we think about certain societal norms, but how acceptance can have beautiful impacts on human lives. I create theatre that stems from empathy, love, and culture.

I strive to create work with artists who are not seen or heard, in a loving; yet brave space. There we can cultivate work that demands those conversations. We will bring people together. Forcing perspectives to change, creating a deeper understanding of one another. That’s the beauty in life. Those moments are where the secrets lie, the answers to questions we didn’t even know were worth asking. When two people of differing viewpoints can come together share the same experience and converse through the lens of empathy. I especially want young Latine students, kids, or even my peers to look up at a stage and know that they are valued, seen, and it’s possible for their stories to be told. If I could light a fire under someone’s heart and brighten behind their eyes for even just one person. My job would be important and my dreams would be fulfilled.

When I asked my friends to describe me they used the words compassionate, empathetic, and determined. They also used words like ambitious, charismatic, badass, hardworking, and bubbly.  I love all things music, I was a big band geek when I played trombone in middle and high school. I get excited when talking about music theory and gorgeous musical chords (especially when sung) give me chills! Family and my friends are the MOST important things in my life. They are my rocks, my support system, and the ones whom keep me sane most nights.

Growing up in Orlando, Fl I love time in the sun, big cities, and rollercoasters. I’m an adrenaline junkie to an extent. I hate heights, but for some odd reason when I feel like I’m attached somewhere I love to climb into the sky. I find that theatre gives me that feeling but on the ground. I don’t have to put my life out on the line in order to take a risk. I feel the greatest rush when I put my all into a role. I love dissecting a show and a role. Pulling out themes, the parts of a play or musical, and discussing our opinions with a group of friends; is one of my favorite parts in a process. I love the academia of it all. It makes me feel as though I didn’t fully waste 12 years of adolescent education just to pursue a degree in Musical Theatre. Not only that but it’s fun to dive that far into a character so that when on stage I can trust that I know the world of the play to the fullest extent.
